TNJ Sustainability & Resilience Toolkit: Sustainability Solutions
Green Fleets
A green fleet is a fleet of vehicles that is fuel efficient, relies on alternative energy sources such as electricity or biodiesel, and consists of vehicles that are appropriately sized for the purposes they serve. Counties and municipalities should assemble a green fleet over time as existing vehicle replacements and upgrades become necessary. Greening a fleet is an effective strategy for local governments to make direct, measurable, and impactful steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By tracking fleet data such as vehicle fuel efficiency and emissions over time, a county or municipality should clearly show the environmental, and often financial benefits of purchasing green vehicles. Lastly, because of their purchasing power and the visibility of their vehicles, counties and municipalities are uniquely positioned to be local leaders in raising awareness of alternative fuel vehicles.
