SUMMARY:Livable Task Force Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As you may recall\, the Together North Jersey Forum originally schedule for March 20\, 2020 was canceled due to the outbreak of COVID-19.  Since the stay-at-home order is still in effect (but time is moving on!) we have decided to plan a series of virtual Task Force meeting in its place. \nThese virtual task force meetings will cover much of the same content as the TNJ Forum\, albeit with a VERY abbreviated “plenary” presentation (we’re talking 5 minutes abbreviated) by Jon Carnegie.  The bulk of the time will be devoted to what would have been the “breakout sessions” for the Task Forces.  The meeting will include a discussion of current work underway in the Task Forces\, as well as a look forward at the upcoming Together North Jersey Reexamination process scheduled to begin this summer.  This process will assess how our region has changed since the original plan was completed in 2015 (hint: a lot has changed!) and how we can adapt the plan’s priorities an goals to continue to implement a sustainable future for our region.  This work is more important than ever and we hope you’ll join us and reengage! \nThe next meeting of the Livable Task Force will take place on May 7\, 2020 at 10am.  If you are interested in attending please email Miriam Salerno at miriam.salerno@ejb.rutgers.edu for login information. \nAgenda forthcoming. \n

SUMMARY:TNJ Institute: Neighborhood Empowerment Models
DESCRIPTION:Neighborhood Empower Models: Crime Prevention and Beyond \nStrategies and opportunities for neighborhood improvements are available through a variety of programs and formats. But it takes high quality community engagement and leadership to put strategies into action and create vibrant places where people want to live\, work and visit.  Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a community problem-solving approach that brings together law enforcement\, city planners\, residents and local stakeholders to assess a neighborhood’s vulnerabilities to crime and collaboratively develop meaningful solutions. Community members can become leaders by self-organizing within a multi-disciplinary team to work ahead of or in tandem with local government rather than waiting for government-led projects. Good lighting and community-driven design and maintenance of public spaces are just a couple examples of how communities can help deter crime and make members of the community feel safer. \nThis workshop will go beyond training participants in crime prevention concepts. DESCRIPTION:Join Urban Essex Coalition for Smart Growth (UEC) at NEXT STOP ART\, a hands-on community arts event where families\, friends\, neighbors\, and commuters who use Broad Street Station can enjoy stimulating art from several local artists and entrepreneurs. The event will take place on Saturday\, October 12 from 1 to 5 pm at NJ Transit’s Broad Street Station Plaza located at the intersection of University and Lackawanna Avenues in Downtown Newark\, NJ. \nThe day will feature “Cellophane Murals” by local artists Steve Green and Elijah Minton\, friends of Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate; “Chalk Talk” an interactive arts project hosted/curated by Vibes After Dark\, where community members can make their voices heard through the use of chalk art; on the spot screen printing workshop and giveaway with the Newark Print Shop\, featuring artwork designed for NJ Transit\, by the late Newark artist Jerry Gant; and a “Platform Parklet” installation by Chambers Design. \nNEXT STOP ART is a collaboration between several UEC members including NJ Transit\, the City of Newark\, La Casa de Don Pedro\, Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate and James Hughes/Keller Williams NJ Metro Group\, with funding from Newark Arts’ ArtStart Grant Program and National Association of REALTORS through the NCJAR on behalf of its local members.

While adequate supply is essential to promote a healthy economic environment\, too much parking can take an overly large share of valuable land\, cost a lot of money\, and create an uninviting landscape. SUMMARY:TNJ Institute: Transit Hub Guidebook Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Revitalizing areas around transit stations can help connect a community’s businesses\, public spaces\, residential areas and public transportation resources. But taking on such a project can be a major challenge. The Together North Jersey (TNJ) Efficient Task Force\, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and Rutgers University’s Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC) have developed a new resource to help communities interested in creating a vibrant transit hub. \nThe Guidebook for Developing Transit Hub Strategic Plans is an engaging and easy to follow guide that makes sense of the often complicated transit hub planning process. It includes best practices from projects that have been implemented across the nation\, as well as knowledge from developers\, community officials and other experts with direct experience in planning for and constructing transit hubs. \nThis workshop will also showcase the exciting work of the 2018 Transit Hub Pilot Program\, which created strategic plans for the City of Passaic\, Bloomfield Township\, and the Borough of Dunellen in northern New Jersey. These plans were developed by the TNJ Efficient Task Force and volunteers from the Community Planning Assistance Program (CPAP) of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association. SUMMARY:TNJ Institute: Green Stormwater Infrastructure & Transportation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Green stormwater infrastructure is a cost-effective\, resilient approach to managing wet weather impacts while providing community benefits. Unlike conventional drainage systems that are designed to move stormwater away from the built environment\, green infrastructure reduces and treats stormwater at its source\, using vegetation\, soil\, and other measures that restore some of the natural processes to manage water.  Today’s speakers will provide sample projects within TNJ and the wider region\, discuss opportunities\, outline the aspects of implementing these projects\, including costs\, benefits and the importance of developing partnerships. DESCRIPTION:The Together North Jersey Competitiveness Task Force is sponsoring its second workshop exploring strategies for repurposing vacant and underutilized properties on June 14. This workshop will concentrate on finding new uses for smaller sites\, such as strip retail centers\, brownfields\, old industrial buildings and commercial buildings. The first workshop in this series\, held January 17\, focused on repurposing larger sites\, such as old railyards\, larger brownfields and suburban office complexes. Repurposing underutilized sites is a strategy for supporting economic growth in many of North Jersey’s communities\, particularly those that have struggled to adapt to New Jersey’s post-industrial economy. These sites are often vacant or poorly maintained and can impede efforts to improve and redevelop a community. This workshop will consider strategies for reusing these once-productive properties that have characteristics preventing their easy reuse in a changing economy. DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the Together North Jersey Forum and Task Forces will take place on January 17\, 2018 in conjunction with a TNJ Institute workshop on Repurposing to Support Economic Development. The workshop will be held as a plenary session during the Forum meeting\, followed by individual Task Force breakout meeting. \nThe plenary session is the first in a series of workshops Together North Jersey is sponsoring to explore strategies for identifying uses for properties that no longer can be used for their original purposes. This first workshop will investigate the overall trends in northern New Jersey’s real estate market that create the vacancies and the need for creative repurposing of the properties. \nThe series will consider the reuse of land and buildings that were once economically productive\, but now\, with a changing economy\, have characteristics that prevent their easy reuse. For instance\, land that was once a busy factory that is now vacant\, and contaminated from its former use as a factory. DESCRIPTION:The Together North Jersey Institute and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) are co-sponsoring a series of workshops to explore the opportunities for creating vibrant transit hubs in Northern New Jersey. \nFor the purpose of this work a transit hub is an area surrounding a transit station – bus\, rail\, light rail\, or ferry – which contains diverse land use\, a variety of activities\, and multi-modal transportation connections that are fully integrated with the transit station. DESCRIPTION:What kinds of arts and cultural activities can help communities?  That’s a pretty easy list to create.  Where should it happen? That’s a harder question. It’s the focus of Crowdmapping\, the second workshop in the series of Creative Placemaking workshops sponsored by North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority. \nCrowdmapping is a fun\, social and serious practice that helps participants: \n\nIdentify creative assets and opportunity areas in a community.\nDevelop more sophisticated strategies for how the arts can address social\, cultural and economic issues in a community.\nSee an area in new ways\, and turn eyesores into opportunity sites\nMake connections with one another\, and build a practice of collaboration that is essential for sustainable creative placemaking.\n\nIn this workshop\, you will learn by doing.  You and your classmates will crowdmap downtown Newark. SUMMARY:TNJ Institute: Creative Placemaking Workshop 1: Introduction to Placemaking
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first of a three-part series of workshops leading the use of Creative Placemaking – aka Arts Based Placemaking – to foster economic benefits in a community.    This first session introduces the overarching Placemaking process to set the table for Workshops #2 and #3\, which will introduce Creative Placemaking\, which is the process of using the arts and other cultural activities as the foundation for your Placemaking program.  Workshops #2 and #3 will take place in the late summer to early fall. \nPlacemaking is both an overarching idea and a hands-on approach for improving a neighborhood\, city\, street corridor or region. This workshop will show how Placemaking can be used by communities to engage residents\, businesses\, visitors\, government and other stakeholders to develop strategies for creating exciting vibrant places that promote local growth and prosperity. The ultimate success of Placemaking depends on the collaboration between all the stakeholders to develop broad-based plans and strategies\, and the local support needed to implement them. The workshop will include speakers who are experts at Placemaking strategies\, and local community leaders from northern New Jersey to explain how they initiated these efforts in their communities. \nFinally\, this session will share how to implement Lighter Quicker Cheaper solutions that don’t cost a lot of money and can begin to make small changes quickly.  This overcomes planning fatigue\, allows communities to test changes in experimental and reversible ways\, and creates a sense of empowerment in citizens that they can actually make things happen. This suite currently includes the Small Business Edition and a proposed Chamber of Commerce Edition\, but will include other tailored editions in the future. \n The U.S. Census Bureau will be hosting the workshop on April 27th in the NJTPA conference room.
